International stars for new Super 2000 and WRC Cups in Rally New Zealand

Next year’s Rally New Zealand features two new competitions within the World Rally Championship schedule – the FIA WRC Cup for Teams and the FIA Super 2000 World Rally Championship (SWRC) – and two international rally stars are already confirmed.

Spanish driver Xavier Pons, a former Citroen and Subaru factory team driver, and Finnish driver Janne Tuohino, a former Skoda team driver, are both entering a Ford Fiesta S2000 car which makes them and their teams eligible for the new competitions.

The successful competitors in this year’s Rising Stars awards programme: Stephen Barker (Scholarship, 21, Hamilton); Ben Jagger (Development award, 20, Whangarei); and Hayden Paddon (International award, 22, Geraldine).

Three of New Zealand’s most promising young rally drivers have the opportunity to take a big step forward in their competitive careers as the recently-selected recipients of this year’s Rally New Zealand Rising Stars awards.

Stephen Barker (21, Hamilton), Ben Jagger (20, Whangarei) and Hayden Paddon (22, Geraldine) have won their respective divisions of the Rising Stars driver development programme with each driver receiving professional mentoring and funding worth over $50,000 to invest in their 2010 rally season.

Opportunities abound for young rally drivers at Rising Stars shootout

Three young rally drivers will come out of this weekend’s Rally New Zealand Rising Stars shootout with professional mentoring, support and funding to help take the next step in their competitive careers.

The Rising Stars driver development programme comprises three elements: a Scholarship and the Development and International Awards, says Rally New Zealand chairman Chris Carr.

Swedish rally legend Ingvar Carlsson, the winner of the 1989 Rally New Zealand, has died recently after a short illness at the age of 62.
