The Citroën Total World Rally Team crew of Sébastien Loeb and Daniel
Elena won ADAC Rallye Deutschland today, claiming their sixth
consecutive victory in this event. Ford's Marcus Grönholm held second
position going into the final stage but a dramatic turn of events saw
the Finn finish fourth behind François Duval (Citroën Xsara) and Mikko
Hirvonen (Ford) who finished second and third respectively.
In the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers, Loeb's maximum points
close the gap, but the Frenchman is still eight points adrift of series
leader Grönholm. Ford's Mikko Hirvonen consolidates third position and
is nine points behind Loeb. In the Manufacturers' Championship, Ford
marginally increases its advantage over Citroën. With both its cars in
the points, Ford now has a 41 point advantage over its rival, with
Subaru third.
The final leg of Rallye Deutschland took in five
stages and 62 competitive kilometres. With a healthy advantage, Loeb
was able to control his pace but the battle behind him between Grönholm
and Duval raged throughout the leg. Duval claimed victory in all five
stages, closing the gap to 5.6 seconds going into the final 18
kilometre stage. However, an error on Grönholm's part saw the Finn
damage the rear wheel and lose nearly a minute and a half. As a
consequence he dropped from second to fourth, handing Duval and
Hirvonen second and third positions.
Jan Kopecký finished in a fine fifth position in a
privately-entered Škoda Fabia. After problems throughout the event,
Petter Solberg (Subaru) finished sixth, ahead of Toni Gardemeister
(Citroën Xsara) and Jari-Matti Latvala (Ford Focus). Retirements from
the day included Chris Atkinson who hit a wall, damaging the front end
of the car too much to continue, and Xavier Pons (Subaru) who suffered
engine failure.
The FIA World Rally Championship contenders now head
to the other side of the globe for Rally New Zealand (30 August - 2
September).
